HAZEL GREEN, AL (WAFF) - A Hazel Green man died after his dirt bike landed on top of him.

Madison County Sheriff’s deputies said 53-year-old William Marshall Bauer was riding on a 20 feet high dirt mound off Charity Lane in Hazel Green Sunday afternoon.

They said Bauer lost control and slid down the mound and the bike landed on him.

Emergency workers said Bauer was wearing a helmet and other protective gear at the time of the accident.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

  • Pretty vauge story. Said he was wearing protective gear, that’s a plus. I have a dirt mound close to me I’ve ridden up a few times. Sounds about the same size. I’d have to rule it a “freak” accident. Same could happen to anyone.

  • I was a little caught off guard with the statement “Do you think this guy was capable of doing what he did or do you think it was just a freak accident?” William Bauer is/was my father. He was in perfect health and had so much to live for. He served 23 years in the Army and he was a very honorable man. He was an experienced rider and riding was in his blood. In his younger years he would race and would win those races on multiple occasions. This was definantly a freak accident that has left his family with a big hole in their hearts. But one thing I know is my Father lost his life doing what he loved and that brings me peace. To all fellow riders out there my only wish is that everyone be safe!

  • Wendi, first I want you to know how saddened I am about your loss. I can’t image how tough that was and still is on you. Second please understand I meant NO disrespect toward you, your Father, or your family in my comment. If you look around the site, you will see that I am very concerned about Motorcycle / Motocross safety and the risks involved. Because I didn’t know anything about your Fathers skill level, I wanted to ask the tough question. Thank you so very much for coming on and letting us know that freak things do happen. Trust me, this site does get a significant number of North Alabama riders coming by and reading and your story I thing needs to be heard & passed on to the bike riders of North Alabama.

Safety is key to our bike riding and to our health. If there is anything that I might be able to do your for or yours, please do not hesitate to reach out and ask. Again & lastly please accept my most humble apologies if I might have offended any of your family, as that was not my intentions.

My God by with you and you family,
    Mike Magee
